Inexhaustible Grace

1 Kings 4:29-34 NKJV

And God gave Solomon wisdom and exceedingly great understanding, and largeness of heart like the sand on the seashore. Thus Solomon’s wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the men of the East and all the wisdom of Egypt. For he was wiser than all men—than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol; and his fame was in all the surrounding nations. He spoke three thousand proverbs, and his songs were one thousand and five. Also he spoke of trees, from the cedar tree of Lebanon even to the hyssop that springs out of the wall; he spoke also of animals, of birds, of creeping things, and of fish. And men of all nations, from all the kings of the earth who had heard of his wisdom, came to hear the wisdom of Solomon.

Key Phrase:  Inexhaustible Grace

In a recent visit to a beach, the extent of the sand on the shoreline made such a huge impression on me that 1 Kings 4:29 began to get a deeper meaning. Everywhere one looked was sand, and as far as the eye could see, sand.

Our nugget this week reflects on the inexplicable breadth and depth of Gods grace upon Solomon. The Message translation of the Bible reflects it this way – “God gave Solomon wisdom—the deepest of understanding and the largest of hearts. There was nothing beyond him, nothing he couldn’t handle”.

There are several ways we see God’s grace in operation in Solomons life; “wisdom, exceedingly great understanding and largeness of heart”. And these are differentiated and emphasised so we can seek God’s face to operate in that same grace.. wisdom, knowledge, empathy and generosity.

Father, we thank you for your word. Lord, your word says in James 1:5 that we should ask – today we ask not only for wisdom but also for the spirit of knowledge empathy and generosity. Most of all Lord, please let your grace upon us be as the unlimited sand on the seashore which cannot be counted or exhausted. In Jesus name. Amen
